Community Building

Sunday, 27 May 2007

Freshman year at college is everyone’s golden age when it comes to community development and participation. How can you do anything but not be involved when you’re surrounded by so many new and eager faces, presented with so many different opportunities, and have a seemingly endless amount of free time and raw energy?

It’s hard to duplicate the freshman experience anywhere else. The coordination, the numbers, and the means are hard to find in the adult world. Plus, with the demands of a career in programming, many things take a back seat to the frenzied pace of software development. The time you could commit during college just isn’t available any more.

I’ve been looking for this community experience for several years now. I’ve worked in some great, friendly and supportive work environments, but the numbers have always been small and the pressure has always been intense. That’s why when I came across the job posting to work for TribeWanted.com, my attention was piqued. The job is not only part of a community, the job is to help build the community. I’m not just part of the community experience; I’m actually getting to help shape the experience!

M and I will be moving to Fiji early this summer to fully immerse ourselves in this exciting opportunity. I’ll be splitting my time between Vorovoro and Suva (the capital), where I’ll be working with the team at Oceanic. I’ve started putting a few points on my Google map of Fiji. With the timing, we’ll have two winters this year since winter is just now starting south of the equator. Fortunately, the highs in Fiji are around 30C (90ish F), so the only winter clothes we’ll take are some knee length bathing suits! Exciting times!
